If a burner clicks without lighting — Knob off. Once it is cool, seat the cap level and turn the head so its two tabs sit away from the igniter, then try once. Still no flame: book. Book this week

If Convection Broil keeps switching the flame off — On the gas oven that is the cycle: the broil burner runs three minutes, the fan circulates for one, and it repeats until you turn it off. Safe to wait

If a burner flame burns tall and yellow instead of blue — Knob off. Once it is cool, clean any spill residue out of that burner's ports. Still tall and yellow when clean: book, as the air setting needs a look. Book this week

What fails on this series
- A burner sparks but will not catch A cap sitting crooked, head tabs turned toward the igniter, or ports half-blocked by a spill. If the burner is clean and properly seated, the igniter or the valve behind that knob is next. Book this week
- The oven will not bake On an RVGR3 with both knobs set, the U-shaped bake burners under the oven floor are not lighting, and the parts that light them get tested. On an RVDR3 the bake element or its control is the suspect. Book this week
- Broil does nothing The manual's first answer is the temperature knob turned past the broil position. Set it exactly on broil; a broiler that still stays cold needs a diagnosis. Book this week
- No click from any burner The range has lost its electric supply: unplugged, a tripped breaker or a blown fuse. The igniters need it, so leave the range off until power is back. Book this week
Viking’s 30-inch line
The 3 Series is Viking’s 30-inch-wide range line, sold as gas, dual fuel or electric; the two here are the gas and the dual fuel. Both carry five sealed burners, one of them in the center, and every burner relights by itself if its flame goes out while gas is still on. That is why a 3 Series clicks briefly after a boil-over.
The current numbers are RVGR3302 and RVDR3302. Earlier numbers, RVGR330, RVGR3301, RVDR330 and RVDR3301, are listed by Viking as discontinued, so read the whole number off the tag rather than stopping at the letters.
Sounds that are part of the design
A 3 Series oven is busier than it looks. On the dual fuel model, Convection Roast drives the reversing fan at high speed, and Viking notes that some fan noise in that mode is normal. On the gas model, Convection Broil pauses the flame every few minutes by design. And for the first few bakes on either model, a smell or light smoke as insulation and protective oils burn off is expected; it fades after a few uses.
Questions about the 3 Series ranges
What is the difference between an RVGR and an RVDR?
The oven. Both are 30-inch self-cleaning ranges with five sealed gas burners that relight on their own. An RVGR bakes with gas burners under the oven floor; an RVDR is dual fuel, with split electric bake and broil elements and a reversing convection fan. Can I light a 3 Series burner with a match during a power cut?
Viking says not to. The igniters need electricity, and the manual asks that the range stay unused while the power is off, with the oven control turned to OFF. A brief dip in power does no harm: once it returns, the range carries on working without any adjustment from you.
