What fails on this series
- An elevated burner sparks but never catches A burner head set down off its locator pin, so the ports no longer face the igniter, or ports clogged after a spill. Seated and clean yet still unlit, the igniter or the valve is the fault. Book this week
- A red, flashing ring on an oven or griddle knob The control is reporting an error through the backlights. The flash pattern means something to a technician, so write it down before anything is switched off. Book this week
- The oven takes too long to preheat On a VDR7, TruConvec preheats more slowly than Bake by design, and a cold room or a supply under 240 volts adds time. If Bake itself drags, an element or the control is suspect. Book this week
- The door no longer seals or closes square Wear at the hinges or the gasket. Viking asks owners not to clean, rub or shift the gasket, so a flattened or torn one is a replacement, not a cleaning job. Book this week
- A low flame that drops out and clicks back on Re-ignition is relighting a flame that went out at the simmer end of the knob. A head off its locator pin or ports part-clogged by a spill come first; a clean, seated burner that still will not hold low needs its valve checked. Book this week
Built around the Elevation Burners
What sets a 7 Series apart is on the cooktop. Elevation Burners raise the flame ports so a spill-over does not bake onto them, and the highest-output burners run across the front. Every burner has the VariSimmer setting, and SureSpark ignition relights any burner whose flame goes out while gas is still flowing.
The two ovens differ more than the tops. A VGR7 bakes with gas and broils with an infrared broiler. A VDR7 is dual fuel: its electric oven has split bake and broil elements, a reversing convection fan, TruConvec, three broil settings and self-clean. Current numbers are VGR7362, VGR7482, VDR7362 and VDR7482; Viking’s index also lists earlier numbers with the same letters, such as VGR736 and VDR748, as discontinued.
The lights are part of the controls
Two switches sit under the front edge on the right: one turns on the rings behind every knob as a night light, and holding the other cycles their color between blue, white and off. Turning the color off does not silence a fault: the red error signal still shows. So before booking a visit for rings that seem to have stopped lighting, check whether the color was simply cycled to off.

What do the colored rings around my Viking 7 Series knobs mean?

Why does TruConvec take longer to preheat than Bake on a VDR7?
TruConvec is meant for baking on several racks, so the oven brings every rack position up to temperature before it counts as ready. Viking's manual calls a slightly longer preheat in that mode normal. A cold kitchen or a supply under 240 volts can stretch it further without anything being wrong.
