Sealed top or open burners
Look down at the cooktop before you call. On a sealed top each burner is a cap on a base set into a closed surface, and a spill stays on top: the 3, 5 and 7 Series ranges are built that way, and so are the older VGSC models. Open burners sit over a bowl in the grate support, with the burner visible underneath. The current VGIC5 uses them, as do the older VGRC ranges and some older VGIC ones.
The letters on the tag say the rest. VGR is gas throughout, VDR dual fuel with an electric oven, RV the 3 Series, TVDR a Tuscany, and VGSC, VGCC or VDSC one of the older Professional ranges. The series pages beside this show where each tag sits.
On the visit the work starts at the burner that misbehaves: cap, head and ports first, and the igniter or valve only once the burner itself is clean and seated.

Every flame on the cooktop burned tall and yellow after the gas meter was swapped. He measured pressure at the manifold, found it running high, and set it back to spec. Blue cones again.
Simmer setting on our older open-burner range kept dying under a covered pan. He reset the air shutters and changed a tired valve. Two visits, because that valve came from a supplier.
