If a low flame goes out and the burner clicks to relight — Let it cool, wash the cap, clear the ports with a straight pin and set the cap back level. Still dropping out at the lowest setting: book. Book this week

What fails on this series
- A simmer that dies and clicks back on Re-ignition is catching a flame that dropped out at the low end of the knob. Residue on the cap or in the ports comes first; a clean burner that still cannot hold low points to its valve. Book this week
- Every burner sparks and none lights No gas is reaching the top. The manual lists a supply valve left off or an interrupted supply; a gas smell alongside it makes this an urgent call. Call today
- Broil works but the oven will not bake On the gas models, the hidden U-shaped bake burners are failing to light; on a VDSC dual fuel, it is the bake element or its control. Either is a diagnosis job. Book this week
- Heat escaping around the oven door A door knocked out of adjustment at the hinges, or a worn door seal. The hinge adjustment sits behind the trim below the door; a seal that is torn or flattened is replaced, not patched. Book this week
Reading the letters
Viking’s own documents name these prefixes. In its use-and-care manual for the pair, VGSC is the gas range with self-clean and VGCC the version without it. The documentation index calls VDSC ranges dual fuel and VGRC ranges open-burner models of commercial depth. VGIC turns up on both open-burner and sealed-burner ranges, from 24-inch companion units upward, so the full number, not the letters, tells you which top you have.
Two overlaps catch people out. VGSC530, VGSC536 and VGSC548, along with VDSC530T, VDSC536T and VDSC548T, were sold as 5 Series and are now discontinued; a T on the end marks the electronic-control version. And VGIC5302, VGIC5362 and VGIC5482 are current 5 Series open-burner ranges with their own entry in the finder.
Built from separate parts
On a VGSC or VGCC, every sealed burner has its own cap and igniter and relights itself if its flame goes out. The oven bakes with U-shaped gas burners beneath the floor, broils with the GourmetGlo infrared broiler at the top and circulates air with a convection fan. Each of those is a separate part, so a fault in one is repaired without disturbing the rest, and the full model number from the tag is what lets us match the part.
Questions about the older Professional ranges
My tag says VGSC530. Is that a 5 Series or an older Professional range?
Both, in a sense. Viking's documentation index calls the VGSC530 a 30-inch 5 Series self-cleaning gas range and lists it as discontinued. It is not one of today's VGR5 models, so go by the full number on the tag rather than the series name, and read it to Viking Appliance Repair Mercer Island at (206) 208-3377.
Can I use the char-grill on an older Viking range during a power cut?
No. Viking's manual for these ranges is firm that the grill section must not be used in a power failure and its knob should stay at OFF, because of the risk of injury in lighting and putting out that burner. The surface burners and oven wait for the power too; after a short outage the range simply works again.
